Getting married and not enough time for a Preview?

“Caelie did a fantastic job with the makeup for my wedding. I am not local so I did not have a chance to do a preview before the wedding day which made me a little nervous, but Caelie did a great job. She listened to what I wanted and checked in with me while she was doing the makeup. I was nervous that through all the tears and July heat that my makeup wouldn’t last and would be running down my face, but she assured me it would last 10-12 hours through all that. She was right! I am a huge crier and my makeup stayed put throughout the night, even through the after party!
She also did a fantastic job on my mom and sister. My mom doesn’t wear a lot of makeup and was concerned that she still look like herself. Caelie listened and did a beautiful job, my mom never looked better!
All of this and she was super sweet! She made everyone feel so comfortable and at ease.
Thanks for everything Caelie! We loved having you make us beautiful! I cannot recommend you enough!”

Professional Makeup Application Steps

Are you a bride who is interested in doing her own makeup the day of the wedding? Are you a makeup artist starting out? Are you just interested in learning how to do a basic makeup application on your self? Here are the steps I recommend for Makeup Application.

Start by having a squeaky clean face
Have a clean face, its best to have a clean canvas to work on, your makeup will look better and not cling to dead skin cells. Plus by starting our clean you will not have to spend time trying to clean up or cover left over makeup.

Prepping the skin
Cleanse & Scrub:
Make sure you : cleanse, scrub, then use a light weigh oil free moist, or gel, then sunscreen. I prefer a water base matte SPF 30 sunscreen, which also acts as a primer for the foundation.

Dry Lips:
You might also need to: exfoliate the lips with a sugar scrub or lip exfoliation product. Then hydrate with a lip balm.

Eye Cream:
Mature skin or fine lines around the eyes:
Its important to use a Eye cream to help plump up the skin around the eyes if the person has fine lines. I use a eye cream or eye gel around the eye more than not.

Makeup Application Steps
1.   Cleanse and prep the skin. Make sure all residue of eye makeup (including last nights mascara is off the eye) clean palate to start with is important.
2.   Clean up eye brows: Tweeze, wax and/or trim brows (see eye brow theory video)
3.   Foundation, then highlight
4.   Concelear & set foundation with a loose powder
5.   Eye shadow base application (see eye shadow base video lesson)
6.   Eye shadow-lid
7.   Eye shadow-brow bone
8.   Eye liner, top & bottom
9.   Eye shadow-contour
10.   Fill in eye brows & set eyes with powder
11.   Blush (usually two blush colors and/or a bronzing powder)
12.   Bronzer and/or contour powder
13.   Set entire face with loose powder
14.   Curl lashes
15.   False eye lash application
16.   Mascara, bottom lashes, then top (let dry then second coat)
17.   Lips (liner, lipstick, gloss)

Take photos of the Makeup-inside and out side so you can see what it looks like on Camera.

Creating the Perfect Look for Your Wedding Day
The day you have been dreaming about is rapidly approaching! It is time to plan your wedding and decide on a wedding “look.” You want to make sure your groom’s jaw drops when he sees you walking down the aisle.
The perfect look for your special day should complement your venue/location, wedding theme, colors, flowers, season and time of day.
The first step? Find the gown. Your dress is the centerpiece of your “look” and will impact everything from your hairstyle to shoe choice.
Once you have found your wedding dress, splurge on an armload of bridal magazines- if you haven’t already. Flip through magazines looking at hairstyles and makeup. This is most fun when done with your maid or matron of honor. Make a day of it! Open a bottle of wine or buy a latte and have fun finding photos to bring to your preview.
Pull out the photos of brides with hairstyles and makeup application that appeal to you. Remember that your dress should impact your hair choices. If you have a low back on your dress, an updo might be most flattering. In contrast, if you have a simple dress, hair worn long with a soft curl and decorative flower might be most attractive.
Popular hair styles to consider include: ½ up and ½ down, all up, side bun with tendril curls, height on top, all down, straight or curls. It is totally up to you!
Keep your eyes peeled for great accessories too! Keep photos of jewelry- earrings, necklaces, hair pieces- that speaks to you. If you don’t see anything in bridal magazines that you like, then broaden your search to fashion magazines. Remember that large jewelry tends to steal the show in photographs, so choose your jewelry wisely. You don’t want any one piece of jewelry to overshadow you or your dress!
Lastly, choosing a makeup style/application that will accentuate your best features and show up in pictures is crucial to completing your look. Think about the color of your lips, cheeks, and eye shadow. Do you want a dramatic eye and soft lip? Do you want a dramatic lip and soft eyes? Keep in mind that you want to look like yourself- well, an even more glamorous version of yourself. You do not want to totally change your color palate or wear makeup you never wear when getting dressed up normally.
Once you have some pictures of hairstyles, makeup application, jewelry, etc., you are ready to schedule your hair and makeup preview.

What should you expect at your preview appointment (a.k.a. “your trail run”)?
Expect:
* to spend 2-3 hours with your stylist. If you feel rushed during a preview, the stylist is not for you. Make sure you choose someone who is meticulous and patient!
* In depth discussion about your desired “look,” your style in general, and yoru wedding day event.
* Your artist to work with you using photos to create your “look.”
* to have fun! This is an opportunity for you to try different styles and makeup shades to ensure you are comfortable with both and are excited about how you will look on your wedding day.
* To take lots of photos of your hair and makeup- both inside and outside.
* to have an opportunity to purchase makeup for the big day. You will be kissing your groom, hugging family, sweating, etc. which can take its toll on makeup. Reapplication will be crucial to maintaining your “look!” Many makeup artists will suggest you buy a foundation compact to match your foundation color.
What happens after the preview?
* You may want to show close friends or family the pictures to get feedback.
* Notice how long your hair and makeup hold up as the day passes. They should last 8-10 hours. If you had curls or tendrils, how did they relax or fall after the preview?
* Consider your lip color choice. Does it look good in the photos? Did it show up well?
* Do you feel comfortable in your hair and makeup? You should still feel like you.
* Note any changes you want to make to your look before the big day.

Sarah Edwards 9/10/10 BR Cohn

The Belle of the Ball ladies did a fantastic job for the beautiful vineyard wedding in Sept. 2010 at BR Cohn in Kenwood, CA. They were incredibly helpful during the trial/practice appointment before the wedding day. Both ladies arrived to our site on-time (and it was very early on a Saturday morning!) and stayed on-time. Not only did they make the experience fun, but they made each of us feel pretty and special, and made the bride look her MOST BEAUTIFUL self. Natural, but absolutely stunning. Caelie Steele and Briana Fernandez also managed to create a sense of calm in the bridal suite (a seemingly impossible feat, one would think!). Both our hair and makeup lasted ALLLL day and night, despite the time spent on the dance floor!
Thank you for all you both did to make my best friend’s wedding spectacular. I know she (and our bridal party) will look back on the pictures and be very grateful she sprung for such an indulgence at professional hair and makeup!

Just wanted to write a quick note of THANKS for all you did this weekend for the wedding at BR COHN. You not only made our bride, Sarah Edwards, look and feel beautiful, but took such good care of all the ladies. I know everyone was happy with their hair and makeup and felt absolutely gorgeous.
